Identification and Quantification of Injuries in Railway Vehicles During Accidents

Understanding how the human body responds to impacts received during rail vehicle accidents is fundamental to enabling designers to improve vehicle interior crashworthiness, thus enhancing passenger safety. In 2002, Rail Safety and Standards Board's (RSSB) predecessors (Railway Safety) commissioned The Engineering Link (subsequently acquired by AEA Technology and now Delta Rail) to review the levels of injury for passengers in rail vehicles that could be tolerated under known impact conditions. Previous work in this area was reviewed, supported by expert medical analysis from a recognised injury specialist. This research is now being published as party of a suite of research in support of passenger safety. The following records best practice as at 2002.
