Fixing America's Crumbling Infrastructure: A Call to Action for All

The infrastructure in the United States is rapidly aging and is in need of more attention that it currently receives from the public and the government. This commentary highlights what needs to be done to focus attention on this problem. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has assigned 15 critical infrastructure categories an overall grade of D on its most recent "report card" assessing the condition of the nation's infrastructure. ASCE has also created an action plan to help repair the infrastructure. This plan outlines specific measures that Congress should implement. Lawmakers should remember that investment in infrastructure creates more jobs and can stimulate the economy. It is also important for both the government and the public to realize that infrastructure needs regular, preventive maintenance to prevent catastrophes later. This maintenance and repair costs money, and the government and the public need be willing to pay the necessary costs. In turn, the civil engineering industry needs to be more innovative and creative in creating longer-lasting structures and learning from other countries on how to preserve resources.
