Surf and the South Pacific
This article documents the birth in the 1890s and death in 1985 of a small train station called Surf, which was located on the California coast some 300 miles south of San Francisco. The author, a train buff, discovered Surf and the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1974, and began researching its past. The article includes a recollection of a famous crash in 1907 that occurred a few miles south of Surf, taking the lives of 36 Shriners traveling from the East Coast to San Francisco.
