Hercules Aerial Tram/Mobility Study & Report

This study presents a report to the City of Hercules, California, regarding how best to connect the City's waterfront to a new developing town center. The study examines the potential for using aerial ropeways, which would include aerial trams, gondolas, chair lifts, and funicular technologies. The study first gives an overivew of ropeways in the U.S. This is followed by a discussion of ropeway operations and their potential applications in urban environments, including their advantages and disadvantages. The report then focuses on aerial trams, where they are located in the U.S., and their construction, components, vendors, and operating costs. Three case studies outlining the use of aerial ropeways are presented. The study also examines the possibility of creating a circulator system using buses and streetcars, with focus on the advantages and disadvantages of using these modes for Hercules. The report concludes with a look at possible funding sources and recommendations for what the next steps should be.
