Heathrow City Logistics: An Emerging Logistic Strategy for Heathrow Airport
As the world's busiest international airport, London's Heathrow Airport serves nearly 70 million passengers annually with its staff of more than 70 thousand. The author compares its operations to the functioning of a city rather than of an airport, due to its management complexity. To address logistical challenges, the airport is currently developing a concept called Heathrow City Logistics (HCL). The program works with airport suppliers, partners, and other stakeholders in developing opportunities for cooperation and integration of logistics strategies. Key themes emerging from HCL include 1) "Greater Consolidation" that combines goods and freight into fewer vehicles to reduce redundancy and ease congestion, 2) "Move Off Site" for goods to be processed away from the immediate airport environment, 3) "Greater Information and Control" to better understand about goods and vehicle movements around the airport. Examples of the HCL strategy include retailers (through the BAA Heathrow Retail Consolidation Centre), construction (through the Construction Logistics Centre), and the "Offsite Screening of Goods" (to comply with the new requirement of fully screening all goods entering the restricted zone). The author notes that in developing the HCL strategy, the airport and its partners/suppliers expect to reap financial, service, and environmental benefits in integrating their respective logistics strategies.
