Gatwick Lines up for the Future

Described as the United Kingdom's second largest airport and the world's busiest international single runway, BAA Gatwick Airport is poised for future growth. Integral to this growth is the airport's planned investment of Pounds 850 million over the next 10 years. Projects include adding security lanes to reduce waiting times, maximizing the capacity of existing runways, and improving facilities services. Some of these projects have already been completed, while others are currently in progress. Among significant recent investments is airport's Pier 6 project, which features the world's largest air passenger bridge. Spanning a live taxiway, the Pier 6 passenger bridge, which opened in May 2005, is tall enough to allow a Boeing 747 aircraft to pass underneath. At a cost of Pounds 110 million, the bridge, represents a sizable investment in Gatwick's future growth by creating an innovatively designed infrastructure that meets future passenger demand. Another innovation is the 2005 opening of the South Terminal's expanded and refurbished baggage claim area. While doubling the size of the baggage claim area, the Pounds 40 million project has added three new baggage belts, increasing capacity by 40%. Other improvements include the refurbishment of four car parks (representing a Pounds 6.5 million investment). Related to this are noticeable improvements in the public transportation links to and from the airport. With the objective of increasing to 40% the proportion of passengers using public transit to travel to and from the airport over the next 10 years, Gatwick is forecasting a capacity of 40 million passengers by 2017.
