Alternative Fuels for Aviation: The CAAFI Process

The Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative process (CAAFI) has focused the spotlight on developing alternative fuels for commercial aviation. Once considered to be an afterthought to jet petroleum based fuels, alternative fuels have begun to be recognized by the aviation industry in general and airport operators in particular as catalysts for future growth. To meet commercial airline needs, especially related to safety, CAAFI focuses on four functional areas. These include: 1) R&D (for work on bio-fuels), 2) Certification/Qualification (for testing Syntroleum gas to liquid blends and Sasol coal to liquid blends), 3) Environmental (for comparing airport emissions with local air quality benefits), and 4) Business/Economics (for analyzing economic benefits/costs). The article discusses CAAFI's history, from its 1970s genesis in the laboratories of equipment manufacturers and major chemical companies through its present day status as a rallying point for the industry. Under the auspices of "CAAFI’s incubator", the Transportation Research Board Committee on the Effects of Aviation on the Environment, stakeholders (e.g., manufacturers, airlines, airports, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency) come together to discuss how new and emerging issues will help to make commercial aviation the 'first mover' in the introduction of alternative fuels.
