EVR: The New Security and OTC Solution?

This article suggests that electronic vehicle registration (EVR) could potential provide benefits for Homeland Security, as well as ease the shift to open road tolling (ORT) in the U.S. EVR requires affixing a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag to a vehicle to provide permanent identification. The benefits for Homeland Security include the use of RFID to track and identify vehicles of concern. Several countries, including South Africa, Brazil and Mexico, are considering EVR. Although there are privacy implications of EVR and resistance in the U.S., EVR also has the potential to move the country over to ORT by reducing the costs of reviewing images of vehicles inherent in electronic toll collection. It is far more efficient to identify a vehicle via RFID than by video image conversion. The article includes a case study of EVR in South Africa.
