Research on Vehicle Concepts for Elderly People

The aim of this research is to examine, from the standpoint of the entire vehicle, the basic problem areas inherent in vehicle operations by elderly people. In tomorrow's society, which will be composed of a larger percentage of senior citizens, it is predicted that they will lead more active and diversified lifestyles than at present. This means that there will be more elderly people using vehicles as their main means of mobility. Considering this expanded sphere of activity and the increase in the number of elderly drivers, there is a pressing need to develop vehicles which take the increase in the number of elderly drivers, there is a pressing need to develop vehicles which take into account the characteristics of older drivers, including the decline in their physical functions with age. The results of this research are expected to lead to formation of concepts for making vehicles safer, more comfortable and easier to drive for elderly people and to the development of the technologies needed to build such vehicles.
