Modeling Effects of Rehabilitation Actions on Reliability of Flexible Pavements

With utilization and aging, the condition of flexible pavements deteriorates requiring timely preventive maintenance and planned rehabilitation. Rehabilitation actions should be planned in an optimal manner as they involve substantial utilization of financial, man-power, and equipment recourses. The objective of the paper is to develop a model that accounts for the effects of rehabilitation actions. Developed model determines the reliability of the pavement, before and after application rehabilitation actions and considers multiple failure criteria (fatigue cracking and rutting) based on pavement responses to evaluate limit state functions. It assumes all the variables to be beta distributions and exclusively considers correlation between variables. To evaluate multi-dimensional failure probability integral, the model employs importance sampling technique, while the FORM approach is used to estimate the failure probability gradients required for determining the importance and sensitivity measures. Finally, to illustrate the developed model, a numerical study is presented.
