Evaluation of Durability Tools for Porous Friction Courses
Durability of porous or permeable friction courses (PFC) is an important aspect to address when designing this type of hot mix asphalt (HMA). At present, several agencies perform the mix design of PFC primarily by determining volumetric mixture properties. This approach ensures adequate mixture functionality, but it does not guarantee mixture durability. This study evaluates three tests (the Cantabro Loss test [Cantabro], the Hamburg Wheel-Tracking test [HWTT], and the Overlay test [OT]) as potential tools to assess durability of PFC mixtures. The evaluation is based on a laboratory program that includes two different mixture systems with different binders (Performance Grade [PG] and asphalt rubber [AR]), aggregate gradations, and other materials. In addition, a preliminary performance comparison of mixtures fabricated with these systems is included. Based on reduced variability as compared to that obtained for the HWTT and the OT, the Cantabro test is recommended as a screening tool for selecting material combinations to include in more advanced testing toward selection of the optimum asphalt content (OAC).
