Grid and Gateway for the Next 40 Years
On the occasion of its 40th anniversary in June 2007, the National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP) announced a vision for the next 40 years that foresees a nationwide “grid and gateway” network of passenger rail, developed by merging data on existing and planned infrastructure with travel demand data, and enabled by a partnership between federal, state, and regional governments and the private freight railroad companies that own the majority of rail lines in America. NARP’s vision is for enhanced and comprehensive federal investment in upgrading rail lines used by freight railroads with the stipulation that -- as a condition of capital improvements -- appropriate rail routes would be made amenable to efficient, affordable, and reliable passenger rail. NARP’s vision relies on existing assets, connects major population centers, brings parity to transportation options, improves energy efficiency, reduces negative environmental impacts, responds to traveler demands, and addresses current and future transportation crises. With Americans facing record gas prices, roadway and airway gridlock, and concerns about fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions, the need to invest in our nation’s rail system is critical to our future quality of life and competitive position in a global economy.
