Transport of Hazardous Goods

This paper describes how the volume of hazardous goods being transported through tunnels is rapidly increasing. However, there is a lack of knowledge about how to organize this transport in a responsible way and how to find the right balance between economic demand and safety needs. The scientific and research work done so far is the first step on the way to a more rational and responsible treatment. Tunnels, as part of the transport system, contribute to the range of options for the transit of people and goods. However, particular problems arise with regard to the transport of dangerous goods through tunnels. Unfortunately, there is no simple or uniform solution, and a risk assessment is necessary for each individual tunnel, based on rational scientific methodology, which is now available from the OECD/PIARC research work. This tool has proved efficient during its three years of use in Austria and France but there is still a need to extend this experience among other states.
