Carmakers hit the brakes on carbon emissions
The article discusses the interaction between car manufacturers and the European Commission with regards to the mandatory carbon dioxide emission limits to be imposed by the latter in the near future. Improvements to carbon emissions from some new vehicle models are discussed, but it warns that some manufacturers are behind schedule to meet the forthcoming requirements. The suitability of various emissions-limitation schemes are addressed, in light of the characteristics of the vehicles produced by each manufacturer; firms such as BMW focus on larger, more powerful vehicles and would be greatly affected by a simple flat-rate target, for example. Financial investment, Research and Development requirements, and legislative factors which will determine whether the automotive industry can reach EU emissions targets are outlined.
