Pervasive Mapping . The (r)evolution of the core that enables mobility

This paper reviews the evolution of map-based applications & services and digital mapping technology that has revolutionized the way people experience every day's mobility. The value-add of incorporating spatial intelligence into products and services is a gain in convenience, safety, and entertainment. Together with technological advancements in computing, communication, and data content, this enables considerable business growth, creation of new market segments and emergence of new mapping players like Google. Availability of mapping functionality will further spread. New research and development projects are underway, expanding map integration technology and usage to new domains.
