Understanding road safety issues for courier and food delivery riders - quantitative research report
Understanding the conditions under which courier riders, both cyclists and motorcyclists, operate in London and how this might affect their safety is considered an important element to improve the road safety for those who ride professionally. A survey was conducted amongst couriers and food delivery businesses to help understand these issues. The courier industry and the food delivery industry are considered very different and it is important that any safety initiative is aimed at both industries. Vehicles are usually provided by the employee. Delivery companies consider that other road users (cars, lorries and buses) also need to be targeted to help improve the road safety of delivery riders. Awareness of road safety issues and the Courier Code was low within the delivery industry. It is suggested that changing the name of the Courier Code may increase its appeal to the food delivery sector.
