FUEL-SAVING TANKER
Because owners are far more fuel-conscious, IHI is today building ships featuring both improved hull forms and highly efficient propulsion plants. The new concept also makes it possible to convert traditional steam-propelled vessels to diesel. The new IHI energy-saving ships show overall energy saving of 16 to 27 per cent, i.e. about 9-11 percent reduction is possible in reduced propeller revolution, 4-8 per cent in main engine fuel consumption, and 3-8 per cent effective recovery of exhaust gas energy or adoption of the main engine driving generator. The 59,900 t.dw. "Stanford" is the second energy-saving ship to be build by IHI. The new ship features an IHI/S.E.M.T. Peilstick medium-speed diesel engine as the main propulsion unit achieving lower fuel consumption than that of a low-speed engine. To improve propulsion efficiency a low-speed (85rpm) 4-blade, propeller is installed. The main generator is driven by the main engine during normal navigation, and by the back-up diesel during maneuvering in port. The main generator driving gear, which is incorporated in the main engine's reduction gear, the main generator and the back-up diesel engine are arranged in tandem, which greatly facilitates the switchover from the main engine to the back-up and vice versa. The hull lines design has been improved to reduce hull resistance and, taking account of the characteristics of the low revolution propeller, a mariner type stern is employed to obtain sufficient propeller submergence when sailing in ballast.
