Development of Pavement Deterioration Models (by Calibrating HDM-4 Models) for Low Volume Roads in India

Pavement deterioration models helps in predicting the condition of the pavement at a future date. These models form an important input in a Pavement Management System for assessing the state of health of pavements and selecting the Optimal Maintenance and Rehabilitation strategy. The World Bank's developed tool HDM-4 (Highway Development and Management Model) used for pavement management activities must be adjusted to the specific conditions of the country or region where they are to be used by adjusting certain calibration factors. In this study, an attempt has been made to calibrate HDM-4 pavement deterioration models for paved LVR (low volume roads) in India by using the "window" methodology which consists of reconstructing the distress performance curve of a specific road category starting with observation of the condition of different roads with similar characteristics but of different ages. Pavement condition data has been collected for 2 years period of 61 identified in service LVR sections for model calibration and calibrated pavement deterioration models have been validated for different LVR sections. The results of the study will be useful input for deciding the optimal type and timing of maintenance strategies for LVR in India.
