Resilient Modulus Characterization of Granular Materials at MTQ and LCPC

The resilient modulus of a granular material sampled from a test road was characterized by MTQ, using a constant confining pressure cyclic triaxial load test method (CCP test), and by LCPC, using a variable confining pressure cyclic triaxial load test method (VCP test). The Uzan model and the Boyce model were used to predict the non-linear resilient behaviour of the material. The test methods produced different results, because of the application of not only different stress states, but different stress paths and stress histories as well. The Uzan model gave excellent predictions of the CCP test results and the Boyce model gave very good predictions of the VCP test results, but the models could not properly predict the combined results of both test methods. Therefore, MTQ will continue to seek a model that considers adequately the influence of stress path and stress history on the non-linear resilient behaviour of granular materials.
