Complex Modulus Characterization of Asphalt Mixes at MTQ and LCPC

The complex modulus of an asphalt mix sampled from a test road was characterized by MTQ, using a third-points cyclic flexural beam test method, and by LCPC, using a trapezoidal cyclic flexural beam test method. The Witczak model and the Huet-Sayegh model were used to predict the linear viscoelastic behaviour of the material. Both models gave excellent predictions, but the test methods produced different results because of their different configurations, both applying a non-homogenous stress-strain distribution. Furthermore, the third-points test is limited in characterization range because of inertial effects. Therefore, based on this study and past experiences, MTQ will abandon the third-point test method in favour a homogenous test that will allow a wider range of characterization.
