Research on Resilient Modulus of Construction and Demolition Waste Produced at a Sao Paulo Recycling Plant
The high production of construction and demolition waste (CDW) in medium and large cities has become a serious problem. In the city of Sao Paulo, for instance, the CDW amount produced reaches 16,000 tons/day and most of it is illegally disposed of in rivers, roads and deserted areas. Due to the relevance and magnitude of the problem, some efforts were conducted to approach the issue. It is currently known that CDW, after being submitted to a recycling process, can be used as a material in pavement construction. This paper presents the partial results of a larger research effort aiming to assess the possibility of using this material as aggregate base and/or subbase in pavement structures. The paper describes the analysis of resilient modulus of construction and demolition waste material produced at a Sao Paulo recycling plant, owned by the Municipal Government. Two types of samples were prepared: with no additions – called here as in natural – and adding 4% of Portland cement. Laboratory tests were conducted to verify how the addition of Portland cement affected the increase in CDW strength through time. The study compares the different resilient modulus values of samples after 28 and 90-day curing, as well as immediately after the compaction; tests used cylindrical samples of 150mm in diameter and 300mm in height. The resilient modulus test was carried out under the specifications designated by AASHTO T 292-91, in a triaxial chamber. The results show that the resilient modulus values increase in all samples after some curing period and, as it was expected, it happened more noticeably in those with the addition of Portland cement.
