Organisational Performance and Culture in Aviation: Exploring and Recasting Existing Theoretical Approaches

Although there is some consensus on the implications of organizational culture in aviation, there is not yet a clear methodology for identifying organizational cultural traits. In this paper, three existing theoretical approaches to measuring organizational culture in aviation (managerial, anthropological and psychological) are examined, with the goal of constructing a new holistic approach. The author proposes a theoretical framework that combines the strengths of the existing approaches in order to best achieve cultural research goals in aviation. The complementary, combined approach builds upon the anthropological approach's' principal tenet of contextual understanding. The approach then employs psychological methodology to the measurement of culturally relevant attitudes among members of the group or organization. Finally, the managerial approach has a symbolic and important unifying function. Despite some disadvantages, the proposed approach offers broad applicability to numerous organizations and minimizes the existing clash between theoretical perspectives, making it worthy of further study.
