Disabled-Third World's Outcastes

An overview of mobility and transportation issues in developing countries, particularly in Sri Lanka, is given in the article. The author argues that in Sri Lanka, the disabled have been forcibly categorized as outcasts due to social beliefs and economic reasons, both of which are discussed, and as a result are severely mobility impaired. The author discusses past and present government, religious, and social service sponsored homes for the elderly and disabled in Sri Lanka, including mobility aids made available to the disabled at these facilities. The author concludes that developing countries lack both resources and experience need to plan for the disabled, making it imperative for international organizations to step in and assist the disabled in developing countries.
