Matching Vehicle Design to the Road Infrastructure
The vehicle, the driver and the road are the component parts of the road system. There has been considerable interest in the interactions between drivers and their vehicles and drivers and the road, as evidenced by the long record of road-related papers published in the international medical, psychological, ergonomic and engineering journals. The intention of this paper is to examine the interaction between vehicle design and the road network and to explore the consequences of both a past neglect of the interaction and a future awareness of its two-way character. As we have inherited a system which in many parts is much older than the petroleum-powered motor vehicle, the paper will begin by studying part of the historical background to the road system.
