The Misperception of Car Running Costs and its Impact on the Demand for Energy in the Transport Sector
This research identified, through a comprehensive assessment of cross-sectional and econometric models, the motorist's inability to take into account in making travel decisions even the marginal cost of using a car. As such, the work shows a misallocation of economic resources through the misperception of cost and in consequence identifies a considerable over-use of petrol. The paper examines the implications of this misperception of motoring costs, both to transport planning as it is currently practiced and to society in general in seeking an energy conservation program in the transport sector. The paper concludes with an assessment of possible ways of overcoming misperception and outlines proposed research programs to be undertaken for the European Economic Community (EEC).
