Commuter Surge Boosts State Capitals Investment
The author examines the responses of Australia's five largest cities to commuter rail patronage's near record levels. Extra tracks and new trains are among the ways Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Perth are coping with surges in ridership. All but Adelaide are electrified. In terms of funding and investment, both the Australian federal government and opposition assist states in additional urban road construction, but insist urban rail is a state responsibility.
