Factors in the Establishment of Transport Research Centres in Developing Countries
This paper describes how the establishment of a national transport research center in each developing country is necessary in order to make a continuous review of the national policies and priorities in transport and also to assist the country’s planners. The center should make guidelines to coordinate the planning and development of the land, inland water, sea and air transportation, which considers the entire transport sector as an integrated system. The Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) in United Kingdom (UK), is a good example to follow for the organizational set up. The methods and evaluation criteria adopted for transportation planning and research are to be adjusted to suit the socioeconomic conditions and aspirations of the people in the particular country.
