Within the context of conventional rail systems, urban and inter-urban, numerous investment schemes have been proposed in recent years through the developed countries of the world. Such proposals have ranged from the replacement of existing motive power or stock, to the construction of new alignments in an attempts to cater for increasing or new demands, or to relieve congested corridors. This paper discusses a number of rail investments studies undertaken.
