The Need for Public Transport in Rural Areas
The objectives of this paper are to review what is known about the provision of public transport in rural areas of developed countries, the transport problems that are perceived to exist in them, and the efforts that are being made to solve these problems. There are naturally differences in the approaches that are being adopted – though surprisingly few in the trials being undertaken – and it will be argued that these are few, in fact, no fully perceived differences in the precise nature of the problem that is being dealt with. One feature that appears to be common, however, is a lack of any objective measure of what constitutes a rural area for the purpose of definition of a rural transport policy.
