Efficient Message Composition and Coding for Cooperative Vehicular Safety Applications

In this paper researchers present a method of unifying communication protocols for intervehicular communication, specifically for applications with safety systems that require such networks as well as robust standards. The message dispatcher (MD) the authors present is a coordination mechanism that automates the interface between applications and the wireless channel. A few case examples are presented where MD has been successfully applied. One such example is that of a large automobile manufacturer's research facility in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Data taken from testing at this facility was analyzed using a predictive coding method for data transmission. When compared with regular transmission protocols, the MD saves an average of 80 percent of the bandwidth utilization. Some future predictions for bandwidth utilization are presented in closing.
