Road Freight—Aspects of Information Systems
Many organizations depend excessively upon internal information for planning and control. These systems look inwards and backwards; the new infrastructure of communications opens the opportunity to have systems which look outwards and forwards to the environment in which the manager’s decisions will operate. The change in emphasis to environmental data will introduce the need to consider the use of bought-in external data with the internal database. Since the external data will generally be available to be piped into the system, the downloading could be done with small processors equipped with large back-up storage. This paper describes some of the general issues explored during a three year research program at the Center for Transport Studies in England.
