Road to the Olympics: Infrastructure Projects Continue Unabated in China as the Country Prepares to Host the 2008 Olympic Games

In this article the author describes a number of infrastructure projects being conducted in China in preparation for the country's hosting of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. It has been estimated that the infrastructure being built for the Olympics has contributed to two percent of the country's growth in the last four years, with approximately $35 billion being spent. A number of road projects that have been designed to ease traffic for the games are described, including a recent opening connecting th Olympic Village with the Olympic Water Park. Despite rumors of a slight downturn in China's growth rate, the author still predicts that the country will experience a great deal of investment in highways, railways, airports, buildings, and ports. 85,000 kilometers of expressway will be completed in the country in the next two decades with annual investment of $12 billion. Also discussed is a recently unveiled plan to extend road surface improvements further into China's more rural areas.
