The Trans-European North-South Motorway (TEM): Finding the Ways of Practical Co-Operation
The Governments of Austria, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Turkey and Yugoslavia have decided to cooperate in the planning, constructing and operating a motorway of harmonized technical and operational standards. The countries have established a need for one roadway to connect their countries on one motorway. It is expected that the construction of the North-South Motorway will bring many advantages for the economic and social development of the European region. The motorway is expected to: (1) facilitate the expansion of international trade, particularly for perishable food; (2) facilitate and stimulate the development of motorized tourism and provide access to new recreation areas; and (3) create an atmosphere of understanding among the governments of the countries. This chapter will outline the objectives of the project, organization of the project and accomplishments of the project.
