Urban Development and Public Transport in Madrid: ARPEGIO's Role
ARPEGIO is a Spanish public company that has been implementing urban projects and installing amenities and infrastructure in the Madrid metropolitan area for more than 20 years. This article describes some of ARPEGIO's projects and how they have contributed to Madrid's development. The Madrid region has gained one million residents in the last 10 years and is on its way to becoming a megalopolis with no regional plan to give it structure. Although population densities have increased, they are still relatively low for an efficient public transportation system. ARPEGIO implements 3 different types of projects--opportunity areas, joint projects, and new developments--that are all tied to existing or planned public transportation systems. In developing their projects, ARPEGIO emphasizes rail transportation provision, improved vehicle access, pedestrian and cyclist mobility, and railroad integration with the environment.
