The Effect of the Seikan Tunnel on Intercity Passenger Transport in Japan
This paper describes how the Taugaru Straits lies between Honshu, the main island, and Hokkaido in the north. Excavation is proceeding under this stretch of water on the world’s longest undersea tunnel, the Seikan tunnel. The volume of transportation between the two cities has been greatly increasing, consequently, transportation demand will surpass the ferry service capacity in the very near future. Without any improvement or a new route for transportation, the development of Hokkaido and the economic activities of the nation will be restricted. This paper describes the construction of the Seikan tunnel.
