An Economic Analysis on the Relations between the Development of the Tokyo Bay Ports and their Hinterlands
This paper describes how, since World War II, there have been significant changes in the circumstances that affected competition among Tokyo Bay ports for import and export cargo. These changes have severely shifted the hinterlands of the ports. Leading fact ors that affected the Tokyo Bay’s interport competition for import and export cargo may be classified as follows: (1) historical factors; (2) economic factors; and (3) technical factors. The research about the hinterland of the port is frequently found in geographical literature, but there is very little qualitative analysis of the circulation of traffic to and from ports.
