Car owners' experiences with in-car speed controlling systems in the Netherlands

A survey and interviews were conducted of car owners' experience with three types of in-car speed controlling systems in the Netherlands. The threesystems were cruise control (CC), intelligent (adaptive) cruise control (ICC/ACC), and speed limiters. Participants asked questions relating to whythey purchased the speed controlling system, their expectations and satisfaction with the system, use of the system, and behavioural changes relating to use of the system. ICC was associated with more relaxed driving behaviour, but potential lack of concentration. The speed limiter was associated with enhanced attention to the road. There was no increase in perceivedsafety with the CC, but ICC and speed limiters were positively related toperceived traffic safety. No feelings of frustration or loss of control were reported.
