Intelligent Infrastructures, the CASE for Change

There have been a number of initiatives and studies in the UK consideringfuture transport and associated systems. As a result future ITS systems are likely to provide for expected advances in safety related, interactive and value-added services in the context of meeting objectives agreed between national, regional and local government to: manage congestion, improve accessibility, improve safety, and improve the environment. These studies provide a vision of possible evolution scenarios for transportation related systems in the short (2012), medium (2025) and long terms (2055). This paper will summarise these initiatives and studies and consider how they complement each other in the context of Local Transport Plans, the Traffic Management Act, the DfT ITS Policy Framework for the Roads Sector and the Transport Innovation Fund. This paper will seek to understand the principaldependencies of the scenarios and identify potential issues arising from the application of road pricing and enforcement technologies, environmental measures, and social policies. As such, this analysis provides motivation for timely steps to be taken to mitigate any identified risks and fosters the greater partnership between government and industry.
