Airport access
Access has emerged as an important consideration in airport parking due to the predicted increase in passenger numbers, growing congestion on airport roads and an increased focus on the environment. The development of off-airport park and ride facilities would have the advantages of reducing congestion and pollution at airport terminals and improving security. Airport operators are preparing master plans that set out their development proposals. Many recognise the need for additional car parking capacity but areconcentrating on retaining this within their own boundaries, limiting choice and competition. The service provided by members of IAPRA (IndependentAirport Park and Ride Association) to airports is described and the author emphasises the need for airports to make available appropriate facilities for park and ride services to set down and pick up passengers. He concludes that it is important for airport operators to develop a more inclusiverelationship with the off-airport park and ride industry.
