Stockport shows the art of the possible
This article describes the improvements that Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council has made for bus operators as part of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive's Quality Bus Corridor initiative and regenerationplan for Stockport town centre. Traffic flows have been segregated on Bridgefield Street in Stockport with access to a car park moved to a parallelstreet. This has reduced bus through times. Two other major investments have been made at junctions with the M60 ring motorway on the east and westsides of the town centre. Buses travelling out of town have been given a direct route through intersections at Portwood and Travis Brow. The improvement schemes are aimed at increasing buses' share of the travel market. Stagecoach is experiencing consistent growth on all its main corridors in Greater Manchester. Other council projects include combining better bus flows with segregated on-street parking, shop delivery bays and improved pedestrian access on the Reddish Road corridor from Stockport to the A57 at Gorton.
