From trackways to motorways - 5000 years of highway history
This book brings together a history of highways in Great Britain, starting from the prehistoric timber trackways in marshy areas. The concept of long-distance routes dating from prehistoric times is questioned, and it is suggested that many may be misconceptions dating from the 19th century. The network of Roman roads and their construction is discussed, followed by the development of long-distance stagecoach routes, military roads and theturnpike (toll) roads. The construction of modern roads is outlined. A brief history of motorway development and a chronology of the principal dates of significant events in the history of roads are provided.
