They Love New York: American, Continental, JetBlue and Delta Vie for the Keys to the City
This article about congestion in the key New York City aviation market focuses on the major airlines that use New York and how they intend to respond to anticipated requirements that traffic and activities be cut back to avoid increasing delays. American, JetBlue, Continental and Delta all consider the New York metropolitan region, and the three primary commercial airports that serve it—JFK, LaGuardia and Newark—central to their overall operations. Together the airports handled 107 million passengers in the most recent year for which records are available. Federal intervention at the direction of President George Bush suggests that the U.S. DOT and FAA will be getting involved in programs to ease the crowding. However, it is not clear how it would work. Possible scenarios are discussed, including FAA intervention in scheduling practices.
