The Influence of Sensitivity for Road Traffic Noise on Residential Location: Does It Trigger a Process of Spatial Selection?

This article considers the impact of noise levels on individual's choices of residence in the Netherlands. The authors note that sometimes a process of self-selection may take place on the basis of noise sensitivity. For example, noise-sensitive people would either leave high noise areas or not move into these areas in the first place. This would result in a "survivor population" remaining in the high noise areas. The authors' study did not demonstrated evidence of a process of self-selection based on noise sensitivity. However, the results did indicate that noise-sensitive people are less satisfied with their living environment and are move willing to move than those who are not noise sensitive. The authors caution that their study only included a small sample size, so external validity is limited.
