Telematics Master Plan Austria: Telematics Applications for Traffic and Transport

Transportation policies and regulations must be flexible, in order to support constant changes in the mobility behavior patterns of the population and in business processes. Infrastructure construction projects alone cannot cope with the changing requirements of the transportation system. Modern transportation policy must include traffic control, traffic monitoring, and transportation management. This article describes the national telematics master plan, which, along with a mission statement that encompasses measures and defined priorities, offers a structured approach to the application of telematics for the Austrian transportation system. The Austrian government agency, the Federal Ministry of Transport Innovation and Technology, focuses on assessing the transportation system as a whole and not considering each mode of transportation individually. The master plan includes measures for transport telematics that cover all modes of transportation and that are designed to achieve a long-term strategic effect. The author concludes that Austria can play an active part as a role model for the development of a sustainable and compatible transportation system in other parts of Central Europe.
