Rail Is Key to Improving Urban Mobility
At the recent BCN Rail conference in Barcelona, Spain, the International Association of Public Transport's (UITP's) secretary general, Hans Rat, discussed why he believes that rail transportation is key in dealing with increasing global urbanization. The world's population is expected to grow from 6 billion today to between 7 and 8.6 billion by 2020, with the highest growth rates slated for the less developed nations. Increasingly, people are flocking to cities. Rat believes that rail is most appropriate in providing inter-suburb links, as well as radial links between suburbs and city centers. Rat's views on such issues as the correlation between rail ridership and rail system efficiency, the ability of rail systems to effectively compete with automobile transportation, rail capacity, economics, and funding, including public sources, are all discussed.
