The Only Way to Fly
Airports increasingly are incorporating "green" principles into their planning, design and operations. This article discusses the factors that are driving this trend and ways that other airports can be encouraged to emphasize sustainability. Examples are given of airports that have successfully implemented environmentally-friendly programs, including Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, which is using a sustainable design manual to build a new runway and terminal. Another highlighted example is San Francisco International Airport, which has implemented an across-the-board program that includes green buildings, air quality enhancement, noise abatement, water conservation, solid waste reduction and recycling, and energy efficiency. Since economics is a major impetus for greening airports, more airports will be willing to try sustainable programs if they can see direct benefits.
