VTA Bicycle Technical Guidelines: A Guide for Local Agencies in the Planning, Design and Maintenance of Bicycle Facilities
The purpose of these guidelines is to facilitate and ensure consistency in the design and construction of bicycle projects that are a part of the Santa Clara County bicycle system. The guidelines address three areas: 1) design of bikeways and roadways, including the physical dimensions and details of constructing and retrofitting bike lanes, bike routes, and roadways where bicycles are permitted. Design details such as signing, striping, signal issues and roadway obstructions are also included; 2) maintenance of on-street bikeways and roadways, including best practices for maintaining on-street bikeways and roadways to be safe for bicycle travel:and, 3) bicycle parking, including the recommended types of storage, placement criteria and quantity for particular locations.
