Growing Capacity
UK passenger and freight demands are at near record levels on constrained railroad infrastructure. This article discusses some of the alternatives to building more infrastructure, including the better use of technology and improving customer service. Although many services are running at high capacity levels, the overall capacity of passenger and freight services is generally less than 40%. More needs to be done to get real-time information to passengers about travel times, seat availability, prices and car parking options so they can make better informed transportation choices. This could help fill some of the empty seats across the network and lessen the immediate need to invest in more infrastructure and rolling stock.
