San Francisco 2005 Collision Report
Using collision data from the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), this report presents a summary of long-term collision trends on San Francisco city streets. A variety of statistics are included, as well as lists, such as those of intersections with the highest collision totals in the city. Citywide collision trends show that while non-fatal injury collisions in San Francisco in 2005 increased by six percent from 2004, this figure of 3,227 reflects the second lowest injury collision total of the past ten years. In addition, the number of collisions resulting in fatalities in 2005 is below the average number of fatal collisions over the last ten years. The report indicates that the most common collision is between two motor vehicles, and that this comprises over half the injury collisions reported in 2005. Of particular concern, however, are the statistics indicating that close to 22 percent of San Francisco injury collisions and 54 percent of fatal collisions involve pedestrians. The report also includes a brief analysis of factors influencing collision trends. These include: 1) demographic changes, such as the number and ages of drivers and pedestrians; 2) economic fluctuations leading to more driving; 3) social incentives; 4) improvements in vehicular technology and safety standards; 5) changes in local enforcement levels; 6) cultural changes and educational efforts leading to fewer injuries or decreased safety; and, 7) infrastructure improvements involving street conditions and traffic engineering.
