A clear-cut strategy
This article reports measures taken by Southampton city council, on the south coast of England, to improve the street scene in the city centre. In many cases redundant signs and poles have been removed, street lights and street name signs have been fixed to buildings instead of individual poles, and pedestrian guard railings have been taken away. A road improvement scheme involves widening the highway at key points and at junctions, to reduce speed and increase pedestrian crossing safety. Parking spaces are being reorganised and trees are to be planted. Street furniture is being replaced using high-quality materials and replaced footways will use local stone. The council's efforts have received positive feedback.
